The adoption process
Thank you for considering adopting a homeless pet!
Companions in Waiting takes special measures to ensure that the pet you choose is the best match for you and your family. The following adoption procedures have been set up to up to help us determine that.
If you would like to proceed with an application complete and sign our Cat Adoption Application form or Dog Adoption Application form so CIW can begin the adoption process. A CIW volunteer specializing in adoptions will then talk to you in person and/or by phone in the next day or two. Visits to the foster homes prior to an adoption are strongly encouraged.
Please note: CIW does not support same-day adoptions. Potential adoptors need sufficient time to decide whether this is the right animal companion, and if they are truly able to make a long-term commitment to a particular pet. Adoption also requires time to prepare for the arrival of the new companion animal.
The animal is delivered to the adoptive home by a CIW volunteer. The adoption is finalized with the signed Adoption Contract between the adopter(s) and CIW.
There will be follow-up phone calls or visits from a CIW volunteer to make sure both companion animal and human are getting along fine!
Prospective adopters should be aware that:
- We request a donation of $125 for each adult animal (two years old or older), or $150 for each animal under two years of age. This helps defray the cost of feeding, housing, and providing medical care to our animals.
- Prior to adoption, all animals are spayed/neutered, vaccinated (except rabies) and cats & kittens are tested for feline leukemia.
