New arrivals and featured pets

Joey

Joey was rescued from an animal shelter in the central valley. His time was up and he was on the list to be euthanized. CIW gave Joey his second chance. Joey has all his puppy enthusiasm and is a bright, happy little guy who prances and bounds and always has a good time. Joey's foster mom calls him her "irrepressible energizer puppy". Sweet little Joey just wants to play and be with his special person. Are you the special person this little guy is looking for?

The vet has confirmed that Joey is deaf but Joey knows quite a few hand signals (quiet, stay, down, etc.) and is great with eye contact. Joey knows his in-home good manners. He is age appropriately current with his vaccinations. He has been neutered and micro-chipped.

Smokey

In 2007 a very young grey kitten, Smokey, was adopted from the Marin Humane Society. Smokey's Moms took care of him but in time both Moms' lives took turns where Smokey couldn't join them. This wonderfully sweet boy likes to talk, be petted and to be a companion with his person. In his previous homes, he has been an "only" cat and would probably enjoy being  the only cat in his new home. This fabulous gentleman is looking for his real "forever" home. Is that home with your family?

Smokey is a healthy boy who has tested negative for FeLV/FIV, is neutered, and is microchipped.

CIW Founder Honored with Jefferson Award

Companions in Waiting founder Jo Hamilton was honored in February to receive a local Jefferson Award for her work with CIW. CBS San Francisco has this story and video about the award.

The Jefferson Awards website has this to say about local award winners:

The local winners are grassroots "Unsung Heroes" — ordinary individuals who are performing extraordinary deeds.
Jo is grateful for this award and hopes the recognition will help bring even more forever families to the homeless animals of the bay area.

Our Senior Citizen-Senior Pet Program

So many seniors want and need a companion animal, but worry about managing the costs and care. What if veterinary bills are too high? What if the animal has too much energy? What if circumstances change and it becomes too difficult to care for the adopted pet?

CIW understands these concerns and wants to help! Our Senior Citizen – Senior Pet Companionship Program matches qualifying seniors with loving senior pets so both can enjoy the warmth, companionship, and many emotional and health benefits associated with this special kind of friendship. The program assists with veterinary expenses (up to $500 per year) and matches seniors with wonderful pets who share their energy level, possess wisdom and grace, and bring lots of warmth and love into a home. All CIW animals have a loving place to return to if circumstances should change after an adoption, so seniors can be assured of the lifelong welfare of their adopted pet. If you are a qualifying senior (60 years or older, can document a financial hardship, and do not currently own more than one other pet) and would like to apply for this program, please contact Jo Hamilton at 650-328-0474 or companionsinwaiting@yahoo.com.
